Senegal's Leader Fires Prime Minister Sonko, Dissolves Cabinet

(MENAFN) Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye moved swiftly Friday to oust Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and dissolve the government entirely, state television announced.

"Alhamdoulillah (All praise is due to God). Tonight, I will sleep with a light heart in the city of Keur Gorgui," Sonko wrote across his official platforms in the wake of the announcement.

No official reason for the removal was made public.

The dismissal follows months of mounting tension between Faye and Sonko, once close political allies within PASTEF (African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity), the ruling party that came to power in 2024. Their relationship is reported to have fractured over disputes surrounding party control, governance, and economic policy. Faye ultimately invoked his constitutional authority to remove Sonko, citing the need to preserve national stability.

The dissolution nullifies all ministerial appointments, according to a statement delivered by Oumar Samba Ba, secretary general of Faye's office. "The members of the outgoing government are responsible for handling current affairs," said Ba. A new prime minister and cabinet are expected to be named within days.

Sonko was installed as prime minister on April 2, 2024, hours after Faye's inauguration — once celebrated as a defining political partnership that later unraveled as internal rivalries within the ruling movement deepened.
