Dr. Goodenowe to Host ALS Open House Aug. 15 for People Living With ALS and Their Families

Learn about Dr. Goodenowe’s self-directed research approach to ALS from ALS participants

MOOSE JAW, CANADA, August 14, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Dr. Dayan Goodenowe will host an ALS Open House Saturday, Aug. 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. (local time) at the Dr. Goodenowe Restorative Health Center in Moose Jaw, bringing together people living with ALS, their families, researchers, and members of the center's health and wellness team.

The event will also be available online for people unable to attend in person. Go to www.drgoodenowe.com for details on how to register.

The event celebrates the completion of Dr. Goodenowe’s ALS summer challenge where Dr. Goodenowe invited several persons diagnosed with ALS and their caregiver to come live at the Moose Jaw Restorative Health Center for three months starting in June 2026. The ALS challenge participants were provided free access to Dr. Goodenowe’s educational resources, research technologies, services, and support. After completing the challenge, participants will continue to be supported and followed when they return home. The goal is simple: restore health in ALS and improve quality of life for both the person with ALS and their caregiver.

Saturday's program will give the Moose Jaw ALS Challenge participants an opportunity to describe their experiences in their own words to the ALS community, including the challenges they faced before arriving in Moose Jaw, the health and functional measures they have been following, and what they have learned about their individual health during their time in Moose Jaw.

Dr. Goodenowe will discuss the scientific framework behind the self-directed research model and the importance of measuring changes in health and function over time. Members of the Moose Jaw team will also discuss the assessments, technologies, services and resources available through the center.

"This isn't about telling someone with ALS what they should do," Dr. Goodenowe said. "It's about giving people access to information, measurement, expertise and tools so they can better understand their own health and make informed decisions for themselves. Every person is different. Their experience is different, their biology is different, and what they choose to do is ultimately their decision."

The event is designed as an extended conversation rather than a traditional presentation. Participants and family members will join members of the center's team for a roundtable discussion, and prerecorded video will help document individual experiences during the three-month initiative.

The program will also include a moderated question-and-answer session for people participating online.

For Dr. Goodenowe, one of the lessons of the Moose Jaw initiative has been the importance of looking beyond a diagnosis to the person living with it.

"Someone with ALS is still dealing with everything every other human being deals with," Dr. Goodenowe said. "Nutrition, mobility, sleep, strength, metabolic health, emotional health and quality of life still matter. A diagnosis shouldn't stop us from asking what aspects of a person's health can be measured, understood and supported."

The approach is based on self-directed research. The center provides participants with access to scientific information, health assessments and wellness resources that individuals may consider in consultation with their own health care providers. The program is not a substitute for medical care.

Saskatchewan residents with ALS invited to learn more

Dr. Goodenowe plans to continue to offer services to Saskatchewan residents living with ALS at no cost. Saturday's open house will provide additional information about the program, participation requirements and the experience of the first group participating in Moose Jaw.

People attending online will also have an opportunity to hear directly from participants.

Dr. Goodenowe said those conversations have become an important part of the initiative because the experience of living with ALS extends beyond laboratory measurements.

"One of the things we've seen in Moose Jaw is how much it matters for people to be around others who understand what they're going through," Dr. Goodenowe said. "People share information. Families talk to families. They ask questions and compare experiences. Sometimes simply having a place where someone feels heard and supported can make a meaningful difference in their day."

New research announcement expected next week

The Moose Jaw initiative comes as Dr. Goodenowe and his research team prepare to announce a significant expansion of their formal research infrastructure.

Additional details about the new research initiative, including how longitudinal health and functional data can be collected and studied within a formal research framework, are expected to be announced next week.

"We need better ways to learn from what happens in the real world," Dr. Goodenowe said. "That means measuring people carefully, following them over time and being disciplined about separating what we observe from what we can actually prove. The research infrastructure we're building is designed to help us do that."
