Cambodia Reports Thirteen Fatalities in Border Clashes with Thailand
(MENAFN) At least eight Cambodian civilians and five soldiers lost their lives amid intense cross-border clashes with Thailand, confirmed the Cambodian Defense Ministry on Saturday.
Speaking at a Phnom Penh press briefing, ministry spokeswoman Maly Socheata reported that 21 Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) members and more than 50 civilians suffered injuries during the heavy artillery exchanges, which erupted Thursday, according to media.
The conflict has forced 35,829 Cambodian civilians to flee from dangerous zones in Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, and Pursat provinces.
Meanwhile, Thailand has reported 15 deaths—one of them a soldier—during the ongoing fighting, which has persisted for a third consecutive day. Thousands of Thai residents have also been displaced amid the turmoil.
The confrontation escalated with Thailand deploying fighter jets and Cambodia firing rockets. Both nations accuse each other of provoking the hostilities.
The longstanding border dispute between Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province and Thailand’s northeastern Ubon Ratchathani province has intensified since May 28, when a Cambodian soldier was killed, fueling renewed tensions between the neighbors.
