Opposition Leaders Rip Netanyahu Over Iran War Success Claims

(MENAFN) Israeli opposition leaders launched a coordinated broadside against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday, rejecting his assertions of battlefield success in the war with Iran and accusing him of claiming credit for military accomplishments to mask a fundamental strategic failure.

Democrats party leader Yair Golan was withering in his assessment, writing on US social media company X: "When you are victorious and win, you don't need to declare every few days that you were victorious and won. Netanyahu is under pressure, because he knows the goals of the war (against Iran) were not achieved."

Opposition Leader Yair Lapid echoed the indictment with equal force. "Netanyahu once again is taking pride in the accomplishments of the army, so that we forget his total failure," he said, according to Israeli media. "He did not achieve any of the war aims that he himself defined."

Lapid extended his criticism beyond strategy and into governance, declaring that "the entire people of Israel salutes our security services and is waiting for the moment when we will have leadership that is able to win wars and not steal money from Israeli citizens while they are in bomb shelters."

Netanyahu, meanwhile, showed no sign of retreat. In a recorded address Saturday, the prime minister threatened further military escalation in Lebanon, conditioning any negotiations on the full disarmament of Hezbollah and the conclusion of a lasting peace agreement. He claimed that Lebanon had recently sought to open direct negotiation channels "as a result of the strength we showed," and insisted the war "is not over yet" while pointing to what he called "enormous achievements."

The diplomatic picture shifted Friday night, when the Lebanese presidency announced that Lebanon and Israel had agreed to convene their first direct meeting in Washington on Tuesday — a development swiftly condemned by Hezbollah.

The human cost of Israel's large-scale offensive against Lebanon, which intensified on March 2, continues to mount, with 2,020 people killed and 6,436 others wounded.
